What type of things do you need to consider when choosing a bird for a pet?
Birds can be very entertaining companions. Many birds are colorful and fun to look at. You do need to give the
bird the time and devotion to help create the bonds. You need to make sure that your bird will have
ample space and time outside of their cage to be happy. Some birds do best when they are the only pets, but
certain types, like finches, are happier in small groups. You will need to be able to tolerate noise because
birds are often not quiet, especially in the morning. You will also want to make sure that you live in
an area where there is a avian veternarian close by.
What type of person would not make a good bird owner?
Some birds can live a long time. Larger birds such as parrots, conures, macaws, and cockatoos
can have life spans ranging from 20 to 100 years. You need to make sure that you have a back up plan
if your bird outlives you, just like you would with your children.
If you are the type of person who would be intolerant of noise and someone who would not be able to
keep up with cleaning their cages and/or environment, a bird is probably not the right pet for you.
Where can you get a bird?
Pet shops that specialize in birds and non-profit organizations that rehome pet birds. Birds may also
be available from local shelters, rescue groups and directly from former owners. Make sure to thoroughly
question these former owners to find out why the bird is being relinqished.
