Cats

What type of things do you need to consider when choosing a cat for a pet?

Cats make wonderful companions. Cats can adapt to most types of housing if proper accommodation, food, grooming, and exercise opportunties are provided.
Some useful questions when deciding what type of cat to get are:
  1. Do you have time to devote to providing for a cat's needs for care and attention?
  2. Do you have any family members that have allergies to pet hair or dander or who be be intolerant of normal cat behavior?
  3. Do you rent or do you own your home? If you rent, does your lease allow you to keep one or more cats.
  4. Can you adapt your home to allow a cat to express normal behaviors such as exploration and scratching?
  5. How long is your work day? Do you frequently have obligations after work that would interfere with caring for your cat or kitten?
  6. Do you have room for one or more litter boxes?

What type of person would not make a good cat owner?

Cats like a clean environment, especially where their litter area is concerned. If you are someone who does not have the time and/or energy to keep their area clean, cats might not be the right pet for you. Cats can also have a mind of their own and tend to scratch whatever they want regardless of whether or not you provide scratching posts and toys to keep them occupied. Although cats are often excellent at grooming themselves, some types of kittens/ cats may need some additional grooming. Cats often have less behaviorial problems when they have a friend, so you may want to consider getting two cats.
