Eddie Van Halen was always unique with his style of guitar playing. From his tone, rhythm,
and solos. But one solo shocked the world. Even the most loved guitarists of the 70's were
dumbfounded when they heard it. "What is this sound? How is he doing that?" Were questions
commonly asked. But none knew. Until the day Van Halen had begun their '78 Tour. The Rhythm
and Tone were definately something to be amazed by. But his technique was unheard of: Tapping.
Tapping consists of Hammer-ons and Pull-offs, but adding another note with precise timing that
would make a unique sound. Alongside this "tapping", the harmonics used made the guitar sound
like an old grandfather clock with distinct chimes and even whistles. Nobody had heard of this.
But somehow, some 22 year old kid was making these sounds with no special effects or boosters.
It was all natural, pure skill with passion.
Every tour, the Eruption solo would be played, but unique every single time. Different intro's, outro's,
Tapping sequences, etc. And every time a new album was released, the solo evolved. "The Spanish Fly" from Van Halen II
sounding very cultural with the element of rapid tapping and tapped harmonics that gave the vibe of classical Flamenco.
And one song in particular,
Mean Street, from the album "Fair Warning" drove it home. The song intro consistenting of both tapping, harmonics,
and chugs. And a secondary intro that was both rhythmic AND melodic. And when Diver Down released, another very
unique sound came from the album: Cathedral. Sounds that resonated and echoed resembling that of an old religious tune.
Utilizing the volume knob that adds the "phasing" effect.
Eddie wasn't just any normal guitarist... He was an innovator that went beyond the expectations of rock and blues fans.
And the best part about these techniques, they genuinely sound good and not rushed or "tryhard".
And with these techniques and newfound abilities, people all other the world make music normalizing them
and even pushing the guitar even FURTHER.
Ed's equipment mostly consists of his
guitar and an amp. But over time, he would be able to afford pedals and effects to expand his creative works.
