Basketball is one of the most popular and widely played sports in the world. It was invented in December 1891 by
Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was tasked with
creating an indoor game to keep his students active during the winter. Using a soccer ball and two peach baskets
as goals, he outlined 13 basic rules, and thus, basketball was born.
The objective of basketball is simple: two teams, each consisting of five players, compete to score points by
shooting the ball into the opposing team's basket. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. A
basketball game is typically played in four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes in the NBA or 10 minutes in
international play. The game is played on a rectangular court divided by a midline. At each end of the court is
a basket, placed 10 feet above the floor. The ball can be advanced by either dribbling (bouncing it while
walking or running) or passing it to teammates. A field goal (a shot made from anywhere on the court) is worth
two points, unless the shot is made from beyond the three-point line, in which case it is worth three points.
Free throws, awarded after certain fouls, are worth one point each.
Players are not allowed to run while holding the ball (traveling), and they must
dribble to advance the ball. Defensive players must avoid
physical contact with offensive players (which would result in a foul). The game also has a shot clock, limiting
how long a team can possess the ball before taking a shot, ensuring constant action and excitement.
