Soccer, also known as football outside of North America, is the world’s most popular sport, with an estimated 4 billion fans globally. It is played in virtually every country, from local parks to grand stadiums, and its simplicity and accessibility have contributed to its widespread popularity.

Soccer is played between two teams, each consisting of 11 players, including a goalkeeper. The objective is to score more goals than the opponent within the duration of the match, which typically lasts 90 minutes, divided into two 45-minute halves. A goal is scored when the ball crosses the opponent's goal line between the goalposts and beneath the crossbar. The game begins with a kick-off from the center of the field, and the ball is advanced through passes or dribbling. Players can use any part of their body except their hands or arms to control the ball, with the exception of the goalkeeper, who is allowed to use their hands within the penalty area. If a player commits a foul, such as tripping or handling the ball intentionally, the opposing team is awarded a free kick or penalty kick, depending on the severity and location of the foul. Offside is a key rule in soccer: a player is considered offside if they are closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is passed to them. The offside rule prevents players from simply standing near the opponent’s goal, waiting for a pass.

The origins of soccer date back to ancient civilizations, where various cultures played ball games with differing rules. However, the modern version of soccer as we know it today began in England during the 19th century. In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was founded in England, and the first standardized rules were established, forming the foundation of the game. The sport spread rapidly throughout the world, and it is now governed globally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
