Hockey is a fast-paced, physical sport played on ice, where two teams compete to
score goals by hitting a puck into the opponent’s net using sticks. Each team
consists of six players on the ice, including a goaltender, and matches are
typically divided into three 20-minute periods.
The rules of hockey emphasize fair play and safety. Players aim to outscore their
opponents while adhering to guidelines such as offside (players cannot enter the
opponent's zone ahead of the puck) and icing (shooting the puck across both the
center line and the opponent's goal line without it being touched). Physical contact,
like body checking, is allowed, but penalties are given for dangerous or illegal
actions.
Hockey’s origins trace back to the 19th century in Canada, where it evolved from
stick-and-ball games played on ice. The first recorded indoor game was in Montreal
in 1875, and the sport grew rapidly, eventually becoming a symbol of Canadian
culture. Today, hockey is played worldwide, with the National Hockey League (NHL)
being the pinnacle of professional competition.
